While in high school, Nixon received Minor White’s book “Rites & Passages”, and it changed the way he looked at the world and certainly how to see a photograph. He realized that photography is more than a documentary medium, it could be an integral part of one’s life as an avenue of self expression. His first real teachings of photography came from Rockport College in 2000, where he completed the Professional Certificate program under the tutelage of Brenton Hamilton. Following his time in Maine, he moved to California to assist photographer, Jack Welpott, with whom he worked together for five and half years until his passing in 2007. He learned to appreciate metaphysical and surrealist aspects of photography and the delicate skills of fine print making. Nixon continued living in California until 2014, printing and assisting artists like Arthur Tress, Art Rogers, and William Heick, in addition to learning how to build custom picture frames. Working closely with many Bay Area artists, collectors, museums and galleries, he understands the value of complimenting artwork with superior, professionally made frames. He also served on the board of PhotoAlliance 2011-2013.

Nixon relocated to Asheville, NC in 2013, to continue his career as an artist and started his fine art picture framing business. In 2019, Nixon moved to Spartanburg, South Carolina to expand his business. Nixon maintains a close connection to Asheville through his business partner, Rocky Kenworthy of Dot Editions and makes regular pick up and delivery runs per month. Ben Nixon Studios is open by appointment.
